I believe if they start from soda then the best way is certainly to go with sweet wines. |

Make a nice dinner and serve the wine at the right moment. Before you serve it, build up the reputation and vintage by talking about it. Let your friends know that what they are about to experience is a real treat. A nice-looking bottle that costs some money, really does have an effect. Have them taste a mediocre bottle, clean the pallet with a piece of bread and butter and then have them taste the good one and feel the contrast. I think that objectively, there is a real difference between a hum-drum wine and a quality bottle that can only be known through true experience. |

Let them age, the older your friends, the more likely they are to appreciate wine. I've tried to be a pusher, and it always end up bad. Or you could always move your friends to Italy. Since my time there I have yet to let go of the bottle. |

Yeah I agree age is the most important factor. My sons are 20 and they are not with wine even they are born and live in Bordeaux. I believe in the a second factor which is curiosity. Tasting, traveling, discovering is all about curiosity and even among wine amateurs. Have you ever met people who "only drink Burgundy"? So the conclusion is choose your friends based on their hair (it must be a little bit grey or even bald) or/and check visas on their passport... |
